The End of Hi-Fi Pizza, the End of an Era
It is with great sadness that I belated note the passing of Hi-Fi Pizza, formerly located at the corner of Mass Ave and Brookline Ave in Central Square, Cambridge, MA 02139. I literally ate thousands of slices of pizza there, particularly during the late ‘eighties, when I lived half a block away.
I would walk in the door and one gent in particular, who knew me the best, would simply toss the two pepperoni slices in the oven and pull out the apple juice for me, and I would silently place the four dollars on the counter. There were nights when we simply smiled and nodded — words weren’t necessary. We spoke the universal language of pizza.
This gent and I ran into each other at Market Basket (before things got ugly) after the closing. I told him how sad I was, and he said that many people were.
The sign in the window makes me think that Clover is going in there. It’s another sign of the changes in Cambridge.
I think the secret of the pizza there (and I know many people didn’t like it, but I did) was that the cooked the pies, and the second heating for the slices gave them an excellent texture. Now, I sometimes go to Bravo Pizzeria in Allston for the same effect.
